Phoenix Support Centre: Counselling, Educate, Create Awareness, Advocacy and Action
Phoenix Support Centre provides professional counselling, educate to increase mental health awareness and understanding through community outreach and education initiatives, while advocating for policies that improve accessibility and equity in mental health care. We provide support through initiatives such as a 24/7 crisis hotline to ensure immediate access to help in times of need, and empower individuals by delivering workshops and developing community support networks that equip people with practical tools to manage their mental health effectively. Our services include comprehensive self-help resources, educational materials and resilience-focused programmes, delivered online via MS Teams, webinars, conferences and email, as well as in person by arrangement across all provinces of South Africa.
National Health
We aim to reduce suicide, postnatal depression, anxiety, bereavement-related distress and the impact of unmanaged chronic conditions locally, while contributing to greater national awareness. By prioritising early intervention, we support people to remain in or return to work, reduce reliance on state support and lessen the need for inpatient mental health services. We challenge stigma so individuals seek help sooner, promote early recognition of neurodiversity, and strengthen family resilience through approaches such as Non-Violent Resistance techniques.
Professional services
We provide support and an educational forum for the dissemination of original research in mental health, while addressing the communication and professional support needs of those working in the field to promote best practice in care. We advance education among mental health professionals in evidence-based clinical practice, promote higher standards of care for people experiencing mental health difficulties, and support research that strengthens mental health care skills, sharing its findings for the benefit of the wider public.
Making a Difference
We are passionate about the role we play in achieving positive change and focus on impact rather than recognition, generating and sharing evidence of what works. Creative and action-oriented, we are committed to excellence and rigour in all that we do. We are willing to engage with complex and challenging issues, holding tension where necessary, and continually seek new approaches that challenge convention and push boundaries in pursuit of better outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
NVR is a structured, evidence-informed approach originally developed to support parents and carers of children and young people who display violent, aggressive, risk-taking or self-destructive behaviours. It is now also used in schools, community settings and with adults.
-
NVR is suitable for parents or carers struggling with a child’s behaviour, including situations involving physical or verbal aggression, anxiety, autism-related challenges or other mental health difficulties. It is also helpful for adoptive parents or those reviewing their parenting approach.
-
NVR supports parents to take a firm, calm and consistent stand against violence and harmful behaviour while strengthening their relationship with their child. It reduces isolation by encouraging families to involve trusted supporters, breaking the silence that can unintentionally sustain harmful patterns.
-
Key principles include taking a clear stand against violence and anti-social behaviour, avoiding escalation, increasing positive parental presence, responding thoughtfully rather than reactively, and recognising that community support strengthens families.
